The city was named for Seattle was named after Noah Sealth, chief of the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes, better known as Chief Seattle. The city, comprised of wooden structures, was destroyed in 1889 when the Great Fire took place, but soon after Seattle was rebuilt with stone, iron, and concrete.

Today Seattle is the center of a regional population of 3.8 million people and home for some of the nation’s most famous companies, including Starbucks, the omnipresent coffee company, and Nordstrom’s, the upscale clothing store. The city was famous as the headquarters of Boeing Aircraft, the area’s largest employer, but the headquarters was moved to Chicago in the early 1990s, although a number of manufacturing operations remain in the area.
